SS Conch Wreck — 8 km north of Hikkaduwa, off Akurala
Photo coming soon
Shallow enough for most certified divers, with the hull's oil tanks still recognisable among the scattered sections.
The wreck of the Conch, a 3,555-ton steam tanker built for Shell in 1892 and among the first oil tankers anywhere. She struck a rock and sank on 2 June 1903 en route from Novorossiysk to Madras, and lies in 14 to 20 metres off Akurala, about 8 km north of Hikkaduwa.
