A climb past the surfers' headland to a monastery the gazette protected in 2014; a police camp sits nearby, so ask locally about access.
Monastery ruins on the hill above the Arugam Bay to Panama road, once the Pabbatha Bodhigiri Vihara, with preaching halls, dagabas and Buddha images from a complex first built under King Kavantissa. An inscription records King Mahadhatika Mahanaga donating it to the Sangha; a cave holds a reclining Buddha nearly 30 feet long, broken by treasure hunters.
