Waves break straight onto the shore and rips pull swimmers out; the Coast Guard keeps a lifesaving post here, and if nobody else is in, stay out.

The city's beach suburb 14 km down the coast line from Colombo Fort, with a strip of sand below the Mount Lavinia Hotel, a governor's residence from 1806 that became a hotel in 1877 once the railway ran past its door. Access is from College Road across the tracks; fishing boats share the sand with the hotel's guests.
