Legend has Ravana striking the ground here for his mother's rites; the springs are held sacred by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike.

Seven square stone wells about a metre deep in a courtyard near Kanniya, each a slightly different temperature, where bathers draw water with buckets; a well runs low after ten to fifteen bucketfuls. Excavation found an early Anuradhapura-period stupa mound and a 1st to 2nd century inscription beside them.
