The base for the east coast — Koneswaram Temple in town, whale-watching boats in season, and Pigeon Island's reefs 16 km north at Nilaveli.

A port town on Sri Lanka's northeast coast, set around a deep natural harbour that drew Portuguese, Dutch and British navies in turn. Koneswaram Temple stands on Swami Rock above the sea, and the beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli begin just north of town.
