Elephants in the Dry Zone

“Elephant herds with little habituation to jeeps — sightings feel earned rather than scheduled.

A national park between the Amban and Mahaweli rivers east of Matale, declared in 1984 to shelter elephants displaced by the Mahaweli scheme. Herds here are known as some of the wildest on the island.
