Its name means 'Sea of Parakrama' — built under a king who declared that not a drop of rain should reach the ocean unused.
A 22.6-square-kilometer reservoir on the western edge of Polonnaruwa, completed under King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century by joining several older tanks. The ancient city's ruins begin a short ride from its bund.
