Pilgrims revere the saddle-worn whetstone on the temple grounds as a relic of the siege at the center of the Mahavamsa's Dutugemunu chronicle.
A village temple near the Kala Wewa bund, traditionally identified as Vijithapura, the fortress city that Dutugemunu's army besieged for four months in the 2nd century BCE. On the temple grounds sits the Kadu Ga Gala, a granite whetstone where his soldiers are said to have sharpened their swords.
