The Stupa of Somawathiya

“One of the only stupas where the approach road runs through a national park with wild elephants.

A stupa on the Mahaweli floodplain inside Somawathiya National Park, north of Polonnaruwa. Tradition holds it enshrines a tooth relic of the Buddha, and the shrine draws large crowds on poya days.
