Its relic chambers were opened only in recent years, yielding gold reliquaries — archaeology in progress rather than a finished monument.

A vast brick stupa mound in the jungle near Lahugala, under excavation by the Department of Archaeology since the late 2010s. The dome, attributed to the early kings of Ruhuna, is the largest stupa in the Eastern Province.
