About 4 km northeast of Tangalle the coast narrows to little more than a sandspit at Marakolliya, with the mangrove-fringed Rekawa Lagoon directly behind the beach. The sand shelves steeply and currents are dangerous in places; the lagoon side draws birds, fish and crabs.
