The Reef Off Vandalous Bay

Snorkel depth over most of the reef, reached by resort boats from north Pasikuda; bleaching and illegal fishing are already recorded here.
A marine sanctuary of about 953 hectares between Panichankerni and Kalkudah, declared in April 2019 after lobbying by conservation groups. The reef runs about 2.5 km along the southern end of Vandalous Bay and 800 metres offshore, a metre or so deep inside and 6 to 7 metres at the outer edge, and acts as a natural breakwater.
