Every visit to Koneswaram passes through this gate; the lodge where the future Duke of Wellington lived as a colonel is now an officers' mess.

A fort on the neck of Swami Rock, built by the Portuguese in 1624 from the stones of the Koneswaram temple they had pulled down, then dismantled and rebuilt by the Dutch in 1665 under the name it still carries. The army still garrisons it, but the gate stands open and the road to Koneswaram runs through it.
