The great brick mound is a restoration in progress, with the army helping a trust rebuild it since 2021, so expect scaffolding rather than a finished dome.

A Buddhist shrine and archaeological site east of Ampara whose name means long reservoir in Pali; the chronicles credit Saddhatissa, brother of Dutugemunu, with founding the vihara and building the stupa. A gold-leaf inscription naming King Kanittha Tissa, who reigned from 164 to 192, was found inside a gold reliquary in 1986.
