WALLS ABOVE THE LAGOONPhoto by Anton Croos on Wikimedia CommonsWalk the ramparts over the lagoon, then reach the Batticaloa Gate and the cathedral within ten minutes on foot.
A four-bastion fort on Puliyanthivu island in the centre of Batticaloa, begun by the Portuguese in 1622 and taken by the Dutch in May 1638. The lagoon protects two sides and a canal the other two; government offices work inside the walls, cannon still sit on the ramparts, and St Mary's Cathedral stands a few hundred metres away.
