The line of sandbanks nearly connects Sri Lanka to India and is clearly visible from the air and on satellite maps.
A marine national park declared in 2015 around the chain of limestone shoals and sandbanks that runs about 30 km from Mannar Island towards Rameswaram in India. The reef flats and seagrass beds shelter dugongs, dolphins, and flocks of migratory shorebirds.
